How Career Exploration Is Like an RPG: What Gamers Already Know About Levelling Up in Real Life
In this blog, I will be sharing insights on how to envision career development as a gamer. An open world MMORPG where you can explore, be entertained, challenged, fail and succeed. As a Calgary-based career coach, I work with people across Alberta and online to incorporate a fun, purpose-driven way to explore their next step. If that sounds like you, keep reading.
If you haven't already, you can check out my blog for How to Envision Career Development as a RPG Gamer#1 where I share an epic saga on, journey onto self-discovery.
Career Exploration RPG Gamer Level 2

"Achieving level 2 requires a deep dive into self-discovery."
An RPG game cannot be won without first knowing and planning out our character's non-special and special gaming attributes. At the start, a knight cannot expect to be a mage, nor can a priest expect to be a ranger. To win the game, we need to be strategic by deciding what stats to increase, the limitations, or weapons and armour we can equip for our character.
Similarly in life, we have the ability to transform our lives into that of purpose, excitement, fun and glee; or a life full of disappointment, failure, and misery.
Achieving level 3 brings about utilizing your hidden genius. The genius I am referring to isn't simply associated to a persons' IQ level. It is about knowing how your core values, interests, strengths, personality traits, and ambitions can bring about meaningful purpose and change in work-life.
Stop putting earned gaming stats in the wrong places
For some, they continue to slave away at a job that does not align to their own hidden genius. Not only are they unaware of what their starting non-special and special gaming attributes are, they end up putting all of their earned stats in the wrong places.
In doing so, it's similar to carrying a warrior's double-handed battle axe in a priest support class character, which has extremely low strength and constitution.
Adopting the Career Development Model to reach a higher level

"An average person will spend 90,000 working hours in their lifetime."
We all deserve to invest our time in knowing how we can apply our genius to work-life. To reach that goal, the Career Development Model can be adopted and utilized to our own unique learning style in building stronger career-choice decisions.

Your Stats Matter in Real Life, Too
Career misalignment happens when people force themselves into roles that don't match their “class.” For example:
A creative, expressive person stuck in a rigid, rule-based job
An analytical person forced to wing it in a chaotic work environment
A helping-type personality in a cutthroat sales culture
When you understand your core personality, strengths, and values, you can find a role that suits your unique “build" and that’s where coaching comes in.
Career Development Gamer Level 3
"Life without career exploration is like wearing a warrior's double-handed battle axe for a priest support class character with extremely low strength and constitution."
Once we have a clear idea of what our character's role is, and what stats we can focus putting towards, you have reach level 3.
Keep in mind that with progression, fail or succeed, duel class and/or supporting class characters can be made possible.
