Updated: Dec 26, 2024

Holistic Career Coach Tips#2

Why does it matter?

Being able to uncover and put into writing the career sacrifices that is required or will be required will help us become happier human beings. The key for students in finding career choices lies in uncovering the sacrifices required to succeed.

Instead of picturing ourselves as the next biggest star with unimaginable money and fame while sitting on our sofa, we can instead take the time to prepare and plan for future goals. To do this, you must first discover and evaluate what you are good at vs. lacking. As a result, the meaning and realization of success will be that much closer for you.

Success is an Iceberg

Perhaps everyone we know, including ourselves have pondered the meaning and essence of what success is. Some of us grew up and adopted success defined by our closest family members. Others have defined success through generational ideologies, social media, google search engine, and books. Or both. Despite the varying definitions or philosophies, none holds most personal to success defined through our own past and present life experiences.

Whatever success means to you, take into consideration that success is an iceberg. We may see Gordan Ramsay's living his greatest life with all his latest toys and gadgets, but what we don't often see, is the liabilities (or sacrifices) required to reach that vision.

Someone once told me, "I would pay a million dollars for a day of peace.”

We don't often know how blessed we are to be doing the simplest things in life until we lose it.

What is the cost?

Everyone is created differently. Senior homes can be one of the most rewarding places to visit to find out. It becomes apparent quickly who lived life full of regrets vs. lived a fulfilled and purpose driven life. Don't let living life full of regrets be you.

"It doesn't matter where you are starting, the timing is for you to figure out.”

Don't idolize and follow someone else footsteps. Instead, uncover the sacrifices in the job/career path you choose through personalized one-on-one career development strategies. Undoubtedly, you will gain better clarity, self-awareness, and confidence.

Final Thoughts FOR STUDENTS TO UNCOVER POTENTIAL SACRIFICES IN THEIR CAREER CHOICES

  1. Evaluate Work-Life Balance: Always research the typical demands of the career, such as work hours, travel requirements, or stress levels. Understanding these can help you identify the sacrifices of personal time or hobbies for career advancement.

  2. Consider Financial Trade-offs: Some careers may offer passion or fulfilment but come with lower financial rewards initially. Always weight your financial goals against career's earning potential and decide whether you are willing to compromise on income for job satisfaction.

  3. Assess Long-Term Growth vs. Immediate Stability: Certain career paths require extended periods of study, internships, or entry-level work before achieving stability. Be prepared by understanding the potential delay in personal and professional milestones.
