Be a Brilliant Person Tips #2: Discover What Motivates You

Updated: Dec 21, 2024

According to positivepsychology, motivation is dynamic and vital in dealing with our complex and rapidly changing environment. Furthermore, there are different types of motivation. In this blog, I will not be explaining the different types of motivation; instead, I will share some insight on how discovering what motivates you will propel you towards living your passions. In return, my hope is that this will transform ho-hum habits and behaviours into positive, life changing moments that you can be truly proud of.

Firstly, we should shed light on social and cultural reality of young people today engrossed in the digital world.

According to a report from Morning Consult, 86% of young Americans surveyed said that they are willing to try out "influencing" on their social media platforms.

A 2021 study, The Common Sense Census reported that on an average daily basis, teens (ages 13 - 18) spend 8.5 hours on entertainment, which includes social media and entertainment media like TV, online videos, reading, and mobile games. While tweens (ages 8 - 12) spend an average of 5.5 hours.

A highlight is the words spoken towards the end of the video, "But none of these times ever happened. You never had any of this. When you are too busy looking down, you don't see the chances you have missed." These words weighed down on me. It emphasized the feeling that if we aren't careful, time can quickly drift away from us.

I recall countless of hours I spent playing online MMORPG games in my room. Instead of socializing, times spent with my friends had been squandered by an unbalanced amount of video games. Before I knew it, time quickly fleeted away from me. What came from it was my lack of knowing who I was, what motivated me, what my strengths and skills were, and not knowing what made me unique.

“Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it you can never get it back.” – Harvey Mackay

more to life than This

Now, the video or my story may not resonate with you. Despite this, we cannot deny that many of us have an inherent rationale that there must be more to life than this. As a society, we have idolized social media, fan fiction, open world MMORPG games, fantasy novels, etc. in an effort to imagine a surreal life opposed to the boring and mundane. Ultimately, we all desire to make a difference in ourselves in order to gain the ability to influence the people around us.

Simply pondering over this may be overwhelming and mind-boggling. There are so many steps, direction and methods one can take to make this a reality. Browsing on social media or typing, "There must be more to life than this" on google may conjure up more confusion.
